15 “Starting Over” Quotes for a New Chapter in Life

Sometimes in life, we’re ready to make a new beginning or a fresh start. Obviously, many of us feel that way in the New Year—you know I do!—but when we’re leaving a job or starting a new one, graduating, marrying, divorcing, or making some other big change in our habits or our health, we may be looking for “rebirth quotes” or “new me” quotes to encourage us. And the truth is, every day is a new beginning!

Here are 15 quotes on starting over (or next chapter quotes.) I hope you enjoy them! The first one is from the movie version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which I often watch around the New Year.

“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late…to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”
Eric Roth, screenplay, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

“I hope you realize that every day is a fresh start for you. That every sunrise is a new chapter in your life waiting to be written.”
Juansen Dizon, Confessions of a Wallflower

“If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
– T.S. Eliot

“You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down but the staying down.”
Mary Pickford

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.”
J.P. Morgan

“Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.”
attributed to C.S. Lewis; author unknown

“The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.”
– Anna Quindlen, One True Thing

“Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over.”

“”If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”
Daniel Handler, The Ersatz Elevator (Lemony Snicket series)

“No, this is not the beginning of a new chapter in my life; this is the beginning of a new book! The first book is already closed, ended, and tossed into the seas; this new book is newly opened, has just begun! Look, it is the first page! And it is a beautiful one!”

  1. I wrote a short poem for my nephew.
    Starting Over
    Lost in dark waters
    Cast on a strange shore
Found on no map made by man
Some will lay their mortal shell to rest
One braver than most will stand
    One who never gives up.
