I’ve been reading some of the best summer thriller books lately,
because I’m writing a thriller myself for the first time! I’ve also added a lot of thriller and suspense novels to my “to be read” pile. I thought it would be fun to share some…and maybe get some recommendations, too!
But first of all: what’s the difference between thriller and suspense?
These terms are often used interchangeably, and people also confuse them with mystery.
A mystery novel as one in which you solve a crime along with a detective or amateur sleuth. This sleuth may sometimes be in danger, especially near the end, but solving the mystery takes up most of the plot. It’s like a puzzle in a book.
The definition of a thriller book is one in which protagonist is in danger or jeopardy. There may be a mystery, or more than one, but dealing with the threat takes up more of the plot.
In the BISAC codes that publishing uses to categorize fiction, suspense is a subcategory of thriller. I think suspense novels are marked with a sense of foreboding. You often get the sense that things are not quite as they seem, and something bad may happen. The thriller I’m writing may fall into the psychological and the suspense subcategories of thrillers.
Okay, let’s get into these suspense or thriller books
that are perfect for the summer!
1. Famous Last Words, Gillian McAllister
On June 21st, when Camilla returns to her literary agent job after maternity leave, she has no idea that her easygoing husband, a ghostwriter, will take three people hostage in a central London warehouse. I wasn’t sure whether this one would be for me…but I loved it. The hostage situation was just the beginning of the story.
2. Summer Camp Cold Case, Rachelle Paige Campbell
I have this romantic suspense novel on pre-order, and it’s coming out soon! Emma is attending a reunion at a summer camp where her twin sister, working as a counselor, died twenty years ago. With the help of the local sheriff, can she regain her last memories—and find some answers at last?
3. The Club, Ellery Lloyd
I loved this one, which takes place at an exclusive island resort. By the way, if you were wondering if the author was male or female, the answer is “both.” “Ellery Lloyd” is the pen name for a husband and wife writing team!
4. On a Quiet Street, Seraphina Nova Glass
This was the first book I read by this author, and I absolutely love everything she writes. It’s rare to read a book that literally has your heart pounding with suspense before the end, but she knows how to do it!
5. The Storm, Rachel Hawkins
I’m reading this one right now! The author is also the romcom author Erin Sterling. Geneva Corliss is the owner of a struggling in on the Gulf Coast of Alabama—an area prone to hurricanes. A true crime writer arrives in town, along with the subject of his next book: Lo Bailey, rumored to have murdered her lover decades before. As in Hawkins’s novel The Villa, the story spans timelines and is told partly through different texts such as newspaper articles and excerpts from manuscripts.
6. The Perfect Marriage, Jeneva Rose
And this is the one I’m listening to on audiobook this week! A friend from Instagram and this blog recommended this mega-bestseller to me, and I’m really enjoying it so far. What really happened at their lake house? I’m already thinking I’m going to buy the sequel, The Perfect Divorce.
7. A Killer in the Family, Amin Ahmad
I came across this 2026 debut at my local library, and I’m intrigued. After Ali’s arranged marriage into a privileged family, he enjoys a lavish lifestyle, but begins to suspect his father-in-law of dark dealings and begins investigating.
8. Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn
This is an old book—almost twenty-five years old—but I couldn’t help putting it on this list. It’s not only one of my favorite thrillers, but one of my favorite books of all time, so if you’ve never read it, I definitely recommend it! The author wrote the script for the movie adaptation, which is fantastic, too.
9. It Could Have Been Her, Lisa Jewell
Here’s another one I have on pre-order, because this author never disappoints me…plus, I like any story with a dog. Jane’s returning the dog, who belonged to a missing teenager, to a run-down house with which she has a dark history.
10. Missing, E.A. Jackson
In this 2026 release, a baby goes missing in London during a heat wave in August, 1990. When a woman finds the baby, Detective Martha Allen thinks there’s something off about her story…and thirty years later, when this woman is murdered, Allen looks for answers.
11. The Yacht Party, Benedict Brown
I’m a big fan of Storm Publishing, a newer, independent publishing house that has accomplished a lot in a very short time. In The Yacht Party, Bridget goes on a week-long luxury cruise on an old friend’s superyacht…and of course, things don’t go well. A friend told me they really liked the ending!
Do you have other recommendations for summer thriller books?
Let us know in the comments! And next week, I’m going to do a great post on writing plot twists, which you writers could use in any genre of novel you’re writing.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and have a great rest of your week!

As a fellow Chicagoan I’m really enjoying Temper by Layne Fargo.
