This week, we all watched the trailer for Rogue One, the Star Wars movie coming out in December. Rogue One is not a sequel to The Force Awakens — that one’s coming out in 2017.
I’m not always the best judge from trailers, but I think it looks really fun! And as y’all know, while I like all kinds of female characters, I’m a sucker for straight-up kick-ass heroines.
Now of course some guys complained about the Star Wars film featuring another female lead (even though the Star Wars films before The Force Awakens featured six male leads in a row.)
And of course people protested their protest, because, come on: movies feature male leads twice as often as female leads, and women are more than half of the people.
But the majority of men on Twitter and youtube weren’t complaining about a female main character at all.
Lots of them were super excited!
Some wanted to speculate.
A few took it upon themselves to school the guys who were whining.
I didn’t do an official survey or anything, but Guys Who Are Cool With Female Leads were clearly in the majority.
Why do I want to point this out?
Because outrage drives the Internet, which means that it can become easy for us to get too negative of a view of our fellow humans.
Because there’s no real reason not to make movies with female leads, since most guys have no trouble with that.
And most of all, I want anyone who was whining about another female lead to notice that he is completely outnumbered.
What do you think of the Rogue One trailer? How did the nerds you know react to it? I’d love to hear in the comments. Thanks for reading!
